Irrespective of the type of wood used and the different densities (softwood or hardwood), grill charcoal industrially manufactured at a constantly high temperature guarantees an equivalent carbon content (82% min.) and therefore a high calorific value (7,800 cal/g).
Due to the differences in density for the types of wood, softwood (resinous) is sold by volume and hardwood (deciduous) is sold by weight.
20 litres corresponds to the average volume of a 4 Kg bag.
Charcoal is a "Pleasure" item, hence the reason why the consumer looks for ease of use. Also, although how long a fire lasts is important for professional catering, steak houses and restaurants, it is not that important for family barbecues because in most cases charcoal will continue burning when grilled meat is removed from the barbecue.
From the technical point of view, irrespective of the type of wood used, the purer the charcoal (continuous carbonisation in industrial kilns at high temperatures), i.e. free of organic materials, tar and humidity, the lighter and better its quality will be.
